Charlotte. J. Murrey Atkins Library building renovation

University of North Carolina

The J. Murrey Atkins Library building was built in the early 70s and presents this particularity: if we were to say that the first 3 floors are "full size", then floor no. 4 to 10 would be "half size" and located in the middle of the building. This means that the exterior walls of the upper part of the building are accessible only from the roof of the 3rd floor…

In 1999, renovations were undertaken and pre-built 1" thick veneered brick panel replaced the original pre-cast concrete panels covering the exterior walls. Unfortunately, this new facing failed its protection purpose and let water infiltrate while some panels started falling off. In August 2005, Connor Company was awarded a challenging renovation project: a complete face-lift will have to be done and now real brick will cover and protect the building. This means thicker exterior walls and hence the replacement of all the windows which otherwise would not be in the right position, plus structural enhancement to receive the brick wall.

In light of that, Connor Company, through its superintendent Harold Stutts, realized that conventional scaffold could not be used because they would have to go up and down the walls so many times - removing the panels, installing steel beams and other layers to receive the brick walls, installing the windows, etc. - the only machine that could offer them the flexibility they needed was the Hydro Mobile F Series.

First, a configuration of the units was planned and Steel-Fab was asked to manufacture steel beams to be put on the roof and on which the units are now seated. Heede Southeast provided the crane that was essential in this particular case to bring the units in place on the roof. In the end, 5 working days were required for the jobsite to be settled.

This setup allows all trades to follow one another without any time lost in resetting the job site… Now that's exactly what we mean by Elevating Efficiency!
